24 hour news work

This video is footage of 2 planes crashing into the world trade centres in a drastic terrorist attack. 9/11 is a good example of negativity in the news to make a good news story according to Gatlung and Ruge with their news values. The more negative the story the more publicity it will get on the news such as death and terrorism. This terrorist attack caused a lot of death meaning it was likely to attract a lot attention and become a big story. This is because a huge amount of devastation was caused and in all the reports videos where shown of what happened attracting the audience as the story had many dramatic images. A negative story has a lot of death and destruction so 9/11 would fit perfectly in this category.

For the "unique" news value, this is the coverage of the missing Malaysia aeroplane. This fits in with uniqueness as it is unusual and arouses curiosity because this had never happened before. Also it was not found so it was reported to show us the mystifying nature of what happened. The fact that people did not know what happened to it meant there was a larger audience watching TV news to see if they had found it yet.

The Tottenham riots is a good example of closeness to home because it is in London and affected the whole of London such as homes and businesses being burnt down. Also Tottenham is close to West London meaning it would affect our area indefinitely. The news programme would have a larger audience of London watching as people want to see what is happening to them or their property.

An example of elite nations is Barack Obama's re-election as the USA is a very politically powerful nation, also this story would grab a lot of attention as many people want to see what is going on in powerful countries such as the USA. This is why the election is on British news as well as American news. Also Britain is allies with the USA, meaning that there will be a large audience in Britain watching the story.

An example of immediacy in the news is the german plane crash because the 24 hour news channels instantly got the story after it happened so they could report it rapidly to the audience. This is a good way to gain audience because people will be able to see what happened live on the scene when it just happened. This fits into immediacy as the clip is part of a 24 hour news programme where it is easier to report something straight away.

Finally an example of simplicity is the story about an overcrowded refugee boat being rescued at sea. This is a simple story because it is easy to follow and you don't have to do any thinking and inferring. Simple stories grab the audience that just want to be informed about what is going on but want the news to be snappy and easy to follow; this story gives the simplicity to that type of audience.

BBC News At Six: Structure

The news programme I created a structure for was BBC News at Six.

The 5 stories I chose for the programme were:

Top Story- Israel has shelled a residential area killing around 25 civilians.
I chose this for the top story because BBC News is a more sophisticated programme, this would be a story on the programme as the Gaza Crisis is complicated and sophisticated. Also BBC News covers the whole world not just the UK.

Second Story- A well know politician is being investigated for fraud.
This would be second as usually political stories come next after the main headline in the BBC News.

Third Story- Gunfire on the streets of Moscow.
This would be the third story as Russia is a very strong country and BBC could potentially receive more views as the audience could want to see what is going on in more politically powerful countries according to the News Values theory.

Fourth Story- An Anti-Austerity march against government cuts, the march included 50,000 people.
This would be the fourth story as protests are a big events that all major news programmes cover to interest the audience and to make the programme more exciting however BBC News would put a more sophisticated approach on the story.

Fifth Story- A woman has been convicted of murdering her husband.
This would be the final story because usually in News structures there is a murder story last.

Channel 4 News:

Top Story- Israel has shelled a residential area killing around 25 civilians.
This would be the top story as it is important to cover the Gaza Crisis as it is a long going conflict and interests a big amount of audiences from different nationalities in the UK. Also it could attract a larger audience because from the news value theory the more negative a story the more popular it will be. This is also a sophisticated topic (Gaza Crisis) and Channel 4 News is directed at the higher working class and lower middle class who can understand sophisticated content to some extent.

Second Story- A well known politician is being investigated for fraud.
This could potentially be second as in the generic structure of a news programme, political reports are second. Also the story could engage the audience to discuss it via twitter and the Channel 4 News's website because the story could be shocking for the audience if the politician is very well known.

Third Story- Two prisoners escape jail in West London.
This would be third as it is a story that affects everyone in London because they might want to look out for them. The fact that this could affect everyone in London will bring in more views from those areas meaning there will potentially be more profit for the channel.

Fourth Story- A woman has been convicted of murdering her husband.
Usually in news structures there is a murder story towards the end and Channel 4 News uses the generic news structure.

Fifth Story- A tweet by Miley Cyrus has caused a twitter storm.
This would be a story in the structure as this particular news programme focuses on a younger audience (17-36) and the younger population could potentially be interested in what is going on with technology and celebrities. This would be one of the last of the stories as it is less important than the other reports.

representation: sky news

Sky News has chosen the Police's perspective to focus the protest reports on. This is very bias towards the police because they are made out to be the hero's in the report and the protesters are represented as being the villains even though the police triggered the protests. The young people are presented as all being masked and hooded villains trying to cause trouble although more adults were arrested in the protest than the younger population. The images and videos are of the hooded protesters causing havoc and throwing petrol bombs at the police. Also there was a live video of a fire in Tottenham of a few shops, next to the buildings were the fire fighters putting out the flames. Sky News presenter calls the protesters a disturbance suggesting that what they are doing is pointless meaning that the report is biased towards the police. The most important aspect of the report was that 8 policeman were being hospitalised for injuries including petrol bombs. The presenter engages the audience by suggesting they or people they know could be in danger of losing homes and business to looting and fires. Todorov's equilibrium theory is used in this coverage as the first equilibrium is when everything was fine in Tottenham then the disequilibrium is when the riots start and buildings are set alight, finally the equilibrium is restored when the fire fighters put out the blazing flames. In Propp's theory the heroes of the report is the Police and the villains are the rioters. Citizen Journalism could have been used against the police to show that the police shot an unarmed man. This could potentially make Sky News slightly more biased towards the protesters and rioters.

Channel 4 Case Study

Case Study

Channel 4 News is on at 7:00 till 7:55 in the evening. This news programme is on Monday to Friday. The show was first launched with the channel in 1982. Channel 4 News has won the International Emmy Award for News; two British Academy Television Awards. This programme is owned by Channel Four Television Corporation. The programme is produced by ITN and is presented by Jon Snow; Matt Frei; Krishnan Guru-Murthy and Cathy Newman. In the news the usually wear formal clothing such as a suit and woman in Channel 4 News wear dresses. This communicates to the audience that the News show is formal however in their Youtube channel the presenter has taken off his jacket and is acting more casually. This implies that by using Youtube, they want to capture a wider range of audiences such as the younger population. The news programme could want to use a variety of presenters so that they intrigue a wider range of audiences to watch the programme. The audience of the same group as the presenter might feel that the presenter represents them, making the audience more comfortable by being able to watch a person from the same culture as them. As Krishnan is of Asian culture, this could make the Asian audience feel more acknowledged and represented. This will bring in more views for Channel 4 News. The other presenters and reporters in the programme that we watched in class are used to go to Rome so that they can find out about what is going on. They do this so they can then share/report it with the Channel 4 audience. However one of the reporters stay in their HQ and report from there. In Channel 4 News there is more of a balance in gender and race as one of their aims is too include all culture and gender. The very first shot is the first story, in the background Jon Snow is informing the audience about the story. The opening sequence uses flashes of images, dramatic music and an introduction of the stories. This grabs the attention of the audience as they can see if they want to watch the news because they can see the stories that will be coming up during the programme. The dramatic music is used to build tension to what is going to happen in the programme. In the opening two minutes the presenter is prioritising one headline story however at the end of the two minutes they briefly talk about the other stories that will be on in the programme. In one shot the audience can see the whole of the studio however after that the camera is focused on the screen while Jon Snow is presenting next to it. The presenter is standing next to a board, this is so when he is discussing the story we have visuals to help the audience understand the news report and also to make the report more interesting. Both Journalists and technology are visible in the opening 2 minutes of the programme. A journalist is used to explain a story to the audience at the scene of what happened in Rome. Also the board with images of what the report is about is beside Jon Snow as he presents. This suggests that they want the news to be more interesting and more informative by helping people understand. This could mean that they are trying to target a younger audience. The studio colour is a political colour showing that the news is sophisticated. They could also use the colour as a trigger, meaning that when the audience looks at the colour they could think about the brand. The news programme usually has a format/layout when reporting a story. They usually briefly inform the audience on the report then they go to an interview after that there is usually a voice over. Techniques that are used in the news is voiceovers, live interviews, videos and images of the issues to help some of the audience understand some stories. Stories that are used in the news sometimes are: sport fixtures, prices of appliances, oil drops, elections and world issues such as ISIS beheadings. Links to social media are used to keep the audience interested as they can talk about the stories. Also they use videos so that the audience can see live coverage of issues that are going on around the world. The top story of Wednesday 21st April Channel 4 News is that Tesco has lost 6 and a half billion pounds. This is briefly reported right at the start then after a minute is explained in more detail. This story is reported for about 6 minutes of the programme. The other stories are: food banks have given out more than 1 million food parcels this month; interview of a women who left Damascus to Britain by a dangerous boat from North Africa; Pictures and report on the Hatton Garden Heist; Nigel Farage admits to feeling wonky for overdoing it at the start of the campaign and finally an interview with Robert Downy Junior for the premier of the Marvel News Avengers movie. The other news is reported for about 4 minutes each.  They make the headline story longer as that is what the programme is based on and the other reports are side stories. They made the headline report longer as they want to put more emphasis on it and wanted to fit in an interview with someone high up in Tesco. Channel 4 News is targeted at a more culturally diverse society in the use of a balance of presenters and reporters. The programme is also targeted at the working class and 60% male 40% female. Someone might choose to watch Channel 4 news other than different programmes because the audience feels that they are being represented with the balance that Channel 4 News has of different cultural groups. Right at the start of the programme there is a hashtag for Channel 4 News for people to comment and see other reports. The programme offers a link to talk about the news and uses technology for videos and images to make the news less boring as not many people would watch if the camera just filmed a presenter talking for the whole time. The Channel 4 Corporation and ITN owns and produces the programme while Channel 4 broadcasts it. Channel 4 runs all the other shows that are on the channel. ITN also produces news for websites and channels such as Yahoo and ITV. The programme fits Channel 4 because channel 4 aims too the working class and so does the news programme. Channel 4 also tries to be culturally diverse like the programme. OFCOM regulates the news to make it impartial and informative. OFCOM also decides how much adverts there can be on each programme. Channel 4 News has a dedicated website that has all the stories and reports on it. You can also make an account so you can watch catchup news and comment on the reports shown on the news. At the start of the programme there is a twitter feed to comment on the issues going on around the world. The twitter feed makes the audience feel more engaged so they will watch more in the future. Citizen Journalism is not used on Channel 4 News.

music video analysis

OF MONSTERS AND MEN - LITTLE TALKS

Of monsters and men are known for strange concepts in their music videos. This music video got audiences wondering why they used the concept and narrative. The music video is made by using two dimensional puppets for the scene. This music video is clever as it features the band made into puppets. The video uses eccentric and creative colours however the music video is incidental to the music that the audience hears. This music video is very good to attract a wide range of audiences as the peculiar video could make the audience intrigued and buy the music. The music captivates the audience with the creative concept ( puppet show.) The music video is well edited to make the special effects and concept in the video.

BASTILLE-POMPEII

This narrative is about the artist (Bastille) escaping from society as everyone has been infected into zombie like people. The people have  black matt eyes which was made using special affects. Bastille is trying to find some one who is not infected however everyone he goes to has already been turned into a zombie. There is synergy between the song and the music video as he is talking about he is isolated and alone. He sings about this as in the narrative he is on his own to escape the zombies. At 2.44 his car breaks down when getting out of the city so he has to escape on foot to save himself. This video contains digetic sound as if he is singing to the camera in some scenes however in others he is just acting while the song is playing.

Kiesza-Hideaway

This video is of the artist dancing in the middle of an abandoned street with backup dancers dancing along.  Kiesza is singing in the video while dancing meaning that the music video has digetic sound. The whole video is taken in one shot, this is good for performance videos because the audience will see the performance when it is actually happening. The fact the video is in one take means that the artist had to perform the dance in one take. The camera follows her as she travels through the street and then eventually gets into a taxi at the end, driving off.

Arctic Monkeys- Do I Wanna Know?

This video is made using special effects of a sound waves that move to the sound of the band singing/ illustrates the song. Using special effects, the sound waves are turned into art of the people the song is singing about. This music video has good visual effects as we do not usually see sound waves turned into pictures. The video also uses many different colours to make the video appeal to a variety of audiences. They do this by making the video look like club lighting. At 1.35 in the video the special effects of the art made by the sound wave line starts to appear this follows by eccentric colours made by the line.

ALT J- Breezeblocks

This video has good camera work because the whole video is replayed to look like something that is really not happening such as (2.38) people could think the man is trying to kill the woman with the knife however he is actually trying to save himself and his wife/woman in the closet. The camera editing makes the audience think of why the video is like that as without the camera editing the video would not be as intriguing to watch. The video ad camera editing makes us think that the man is beating the woman however the video subverts from the stereotype meaning the woman is trying to beat the man.

Imagine Dragons-On Top Of The World

This video is a good example of mise-en-scene because the props used in the video describes the narrative such as the old television and people watching a rocket goes to space suggests that the video is about the first time man went on to the moon. We can also infer that from the space suits the artists put on. The fact they are in the video suggests they want audiences to know who they are, they do this by having 4 scenes where it shows each member of the band standing still. The setting of the video is in the 1960's as the television looks quite old and the fact there are old cars in the background also suggests that.

Imagine Dragons-Demons

In this video there is a lot of camera editing with slow motion then at the drop of the song (0.56) everything goes back to the normal speed. This setting is in a concert of Imagine Dragons. The video has an insight to some of the crowds lives and cuts to flashbacks of their problems. The camera films on the huge crowed then turns back to the band with violet lighting shining on them. This video has 168 shots meaning there had to be a lot of editing for each shot to add the slow motion and fades in the video. The fading in this music video helps create the atmosphere for the crowds flashbacks.

Bastille- Things We Lost In The Fire

This is a good example of mise-en-scene as the setting is in a baron desert with nothing around but 1 bullet on the floor. There are a big group of men that are walking through the desert with three dogs besides them. There is blood in a car at 3.33 then it goes to the artist (Bastille) staring at a gun, playing with it in his hands. The next shot is of bullets dropping on to the ground. In this scene the shot is edited using a green screen to just be black with smoke at the bottom. The are a group of people in long black dresses with a Vail covering their face foreshadowing a funeral that ties in with the blood in the car.

Tove Lo-Habits

This is a good example of camera work because through out the whole video the camera is in front of the artists face so you can see her very clearly and the background becomes blurry. Most of the shots are slowed down to fit in with the music and some of the shots are reversed. This camera editing makes the video look more professional and fits in with what the narrative is. All shots in this video are close-ups due to the camera being at her face throughout her night at the club. The fact that camera blurs out the background suggests the producer wants us to focus on the artists expressions and how she is feeling.

One Republic-Stop And Stare

This video has a good narrative about a man who lost control of a car and his girlfriend/wife and child dies in the crash. At the start of the video (0.12) he walks to a priest for a funeral of his girlfriend. Then the scene changes of him having flashbacks of what happened. The music video is appropriate to the song as the song is also about losing control of a car. This intrigues the because in the video the man who was in the car crash tries to kill himself however at the end of the video he stops drowning himself and decides to stop. The producer wants the audience to see that even in the worst times in a persons life committing suicide is not the answer.

Representation

In the Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the white female protagonist (Katniss) is represented as strong and powerful. This is subverted from most action movies as the main character is usually a man saving a woman/ damsel in distress. Also in most movies woman are stereotyped as being the sex subject, being saved and protected by men. This changes the thoughts about woman to show that women can have positive aspects other than negatives in movies. The fact that in this movie the female is wanting to protect her male friend indicates that the producers want to create questions of intrigue from the audience. This plot subverts from the natural action movies of men saving the women. In this movie the young white (sidekick) man is the damsel in distress changing the whole stereotype of how woman are weak and they have to be saved by the males. In this movie men are represented as less important and not as powerful as they would be represented in other action films. Also in this movie the political people in power (president) are represented as evil villains that should be stopped at all costs. This movie subverts of the stereotype of the government being the heroes that save the people such as independence day however in this movie the government is represented as dictators and the enemy. Since there is a stereotype that the government looks after the country, in this the movie the producer subverts reality to indicate that the government is destroying the country and they don't care about the people living in the country.

Planning for Mock Exam

The title for the news programme is called news now. The programme will be on BBC One at 4:30 because that is a time when most teenagers are out of school and will have the TV on when they come home from school. The programme will be on for half an hour at a time as teenagers might get bored if the news is on for too long. The news will have two different segments because the first segment will be on the news in the world then the second segment will be on the teens local news as teens want to know what is going on around them than what is going on around the world. The news will incorporate news that teens feel relates to them such as weather of big games or music events. The structure will be that at the start the reports will talk about the problems in the world and the end will be the local news talking about what the teens could do outside of school and the problems in the local area. Presenters will be young adults around 20 years old so that the teens could feel they relate to the news. The programme will cover local weather, local areas to go out, problematic local news and world news such as war and economics. The logo is a N and a backwards N to resemble News Now. The colour scheme is red because it stands out and is a specific colour of economics and news. The news will contain social media links and will have a website for games areas and places to discuss the local news with teenagers who live near you. On the website you have seven days in advance of the weather when there are festivals.

Teens will be able interact by sending in comments through social media such as Facebook and Twitter. They will also be able to interact on the News Now website where they can talk with teens around where they live. The audience will be able to discuss local matters and news in the world such as their opinions on war.
