24 hour news work

This video is footage of 2 planes crashing into the world trade centres in a drastic terrorist attack. 9/11 is a good example of negativity in the news to make a good news story according to Gatlung and Ruge with their news values. The more negative the story the more publicity it will get on the news such as death and terrorism. This terrorist attack caused a lot of death meaning it was likely to attract a lot attention and become a big story. This is because a huge amount of devastation was caused and in all the reports videos where shown of what happened attracting the audience as the story had many dramatic images. A negative story has a lot of death and destruction so 9/11 would fit perfectly in this category.

For the "unique" news value, this is the coverage of the missing Malaysia aeroplane. This fits in with uniqueness as it is unusual and arouses curiosity because this had never happened before. Also it was not found so it was reported to show us the mystifying nature of what happened. The fact that people did not know what happened to it meant there was a larger audience watching TV news to see if they had found it yet.

The Tottenham riots is a good example of closeness to home because it is in London and affected the whole of London such as homes and businesses being burnt down. Also Tottenham is close to West London meaning it would affect our area indefinitely. The news programme would have a larger audience of London watching as people want to see what is happening to them or their property.

An example of elite nations is Barack Obama's re-election as the USA is a very politically powerful nation, also this story would grab a lot of attention as many people want to see what is going on in powerful countries such as the USA. This is why the election is on British news as well as American news. Also Britain is allies with the USA, meaning that there will be a large audience in Britain watching the story.

An example of immediacy in the news is the german plane crash because the 24 hour news channels instantly got the story after it happened so they could report it rapidly to the audience. This is a good way to gain audience because people will be able to see what happened live on the scene when it just happened. This fits into immediacy as the clip is part of a 24 hour news programme where it is easier to report something straight away.

Finally an example of simplicity is the story about an overcrowded refugee boat being rescued at sea. This is a simple story because it is easy to follow and you don't have to do any thinking and inferring. Simple stories grab the audience that just want to be informed about what is going on but want the news to be snappy and easy to follow; this story gives the simplicity to that type of audience.

BBC News At Six: Structure

The news programme I created a structure for was BBC News at Six.

The 5 stories I chose for the programme were:

Top Story- Israel has shelled a residential area killing around 25 civilians.
I chose this for the top story because BBC News is a more sophisticated programme, this would be a story on the programme as the Gaza Crisis is complicated and sophisticated. Also BBC News covers the whole world not just the UK.

Second Story- A well know politician is being investigated for fraud.
This would be second as usually political stories come next after the main headline in the BBC News.

Third Story- Gunfire on the streets of Moscow.
This would be the third story as Russia is a very strong country and BBC could potentially receive more views as the audience could want to see what is going on in more politically powerful countries according to the News Values theory.

Fourth Story- An Anti-Austerity march against government cuts, the march included 50,000 people.
This would be the fourth story as protests are a big events that all major news programmes cover to interest the audience and to make the programme more exciting however BBC News would put a more sophisticated approach on the story.

Fifth Story- A woman has been convicted of murdering her husband.
This would be the final story because usually in News structures there is a murder story last.

Channel 4 News:

Top Story- Israel has shelled a residential area killing around 25 civilians.
This would be the top story as it is important to cover the Gaza Crisis as it is a long going conflict and interests a big amount of audiences from different nationalities in the UK. Also it could attract a larger audience because from the news value theory the more negative a story the more popular it will be. This is also a sophisticated topic (Gaza Crisis) and Channel 4 News is directed at the higher working class and lower middle class who can understand sophisticated content to some extent.

Second Story- A well known politician is being investigated for fraud.
This could potentially be second as in the generic structure of a news programme, political reports are second. Also the story could engage the audience to discuss it via twitter and the Channel 4 News's website because the story could be shocking for the audience if the politician is very well known.

Third Story- Two prisoners escape jail in West London.
This would be third as it is a story that affects everyone in London because they might want to look out for them. The fact that this could affect everyone in London will bring in more views from those areas meaning there will potentially be more profit for the channel.

Fourth Story- A woman has been convicted of murdering her husband.
Usually in news structures there is a murder story towards the end and Channel 4 News uses the generic news structure.

Fifth Story- A tweet by Miley Cyrus has caused a twitter storm.
This would be a story in the structure as this particular news programme focuses on a younger audience (17-36) and the younger population could potentially be interested in what is going on with technology and celebrities. This would be one of the last of the stories as it is less important than the other reports.

representation: sky news

Sky News has chosen the Police's perspective to focus the protest reports on. This is very bias towards the police because they are made out to be the hero's in the report and the protesters are represented as being the villains even though the police triggered the protests. The young people are presented as all being masked and hooded villains trying to cause trouble although more adults were arrested in the protest than the younger population. The images and videos are of the hooded protesters causing havoc and throwing petrol bombs at the police. Also there was a live video of a fire in Tottenham of a few shops, next to the buildings were the fire fighters putting out the flames. Sky News presenter calls the protesters a disturbance suggesting that what they are doing is pointless meaning that the report is biased towards the police. The most important aspect of the report was that 8 policeman were being hospitalised for injuries including petrol bombs. The presenter engages the audience by suggesting they or people they know could be in danger of losing homes and business to looting and fires. Todorov's equilibrium theory is used in this coverage as the first equilibrium is when everything was fine in Tottenham then the disequilibrium is when the riots start and buildings are set alight, finally the equilibrium is restored when the fire fighters put out the blazing flames. In Propp's theory the heroes of the report is the Police and the villains are the rioters. Citizen Journalism could have been used against the police to show that the police shot an unarmed man. This could potentially make Sky News slightly more biased towards the protesters and rioters.
