BBC News At Six: Structure

The news programme I created a structure for was BBC News at Six.

The 5 stories I chose for the programme were:

Top Story- Israel has shelled a residential area killing around 25 civilians.
I chose this for the top story because BBC News is a more sophisticated programme, this would be a story on the programme as the Gaza Crisis is complicated and sophisticated. Also BBC News covers the whole world not just the UK.

Second Story- A well know politician is being investigated for fraud.
This would be second as usually political stories come next after the main headline in the BBC News.

Third Story- Gunfire on the streets of Moscow.
This would be the third story as Russia is a very strong country and BBC could potentially receive more views as the audience could want to see what is going on in more politically powerful countries according to the News Values theory.

Fourth Story- An Anti-Austerity march against government cuts, the march included 50,000 people.
This would be the fourth story as protests are a big events that all major news programmes cover to interest the audience and to make the programme more exciting however BBC News would put a more sophisticated approach on the story.

Fifth Story- A woman has been convicted of murdering her husband.
This would be the final story because usually in News structures there is a murder story last.

Channel 4 News:

Top Story- Israel has shelled a residential area killing around 25 civilians.
This would be the top story as it is important to cover the Gaza Crisis as it is a long going conflict and interests a big amount of audiences from different nationalities in the UK. Also it could attract a larger audience because from the news value theory the more negative a story the more popular it will be. This is also a sophisticated topic (Gaza Crisis) and Channel 4 News is directed at the higher working class and lower middle class who can understand sophisticated content to some extent.

Second Story- A well known politician is being investigated for fraud.
This could potentially be second as in the generic structure of a news programme, political reports are second. Also the story could engage the audience to discuss it via twitter and the Channel 4 News's website because the story could be shocking for the audience if the politician is very well known.

Third Story- Two prisoners escape jail in West London.
This would be third as it is a story that affects everyone in London because they might want to look out for them. The fact that this could affect everyone in London will bring in more views from those areas meaning there will potentially be more profit for the channel.

Fourth Story- A woman has been convicted of murdering her husband.
Usually in news structures there is a murder story towards the end and Channel 4 News uses the generic news structure.

Fifth Story- A tweet by Miley Cyrus has caused a twitter storm.
This would be a story in the structure as this particular news programme focuses on a younger audience (17-36) and the younger population could potentially be interested in what is going on with technology and celebrities. This would be one of the last of the stories as it is less important than the other reports.
